Senate, House of Reps and House of Assembly

Nigeria elects its legislators from three kinds of area, all delimited by INEC:

Seat Area How many naija-data code
Senator Senatorial district 109 (3 per state, 1 for the FCT) SD001–SD109
Member, House of Representatives Federal constituency 360 FC001–FC360
Member, State House of Assembly State constituency 990 (none in the FCT) SC001–SC990

Every one of the 8,809 wards knows its senatorial district, federal constituency and state constituency, so you can answer “who represents this place?” from a ward or an LGA.

import { lgaConstituencies, getConstituency } from "naija-data/constituencies";
import { getWard } from "naija-data/wards";
lgaConstituencies("Ikeja", "Lagos").map((u) => `${u.kind}: ${u.name}`);
// ["senatorial_district: Lagos West", "federal_constituency: Ikeja",
// "state_constituency: Ikeja I", "state_constituency: Ikeja II"]
const ward = getWard("24-11-01")!;
getConstituency(ward.state_constituency!)?.name; // the ward's exact state constituency
import {
senatorialDistricts, federalConstituencies, stateConstituencies, constituencyLgas,
} from "naija-data/constituencies";
import { constituencyWards } from "naija-data/wards";
senatorialDistricts("Kano").map((u) => u.name); // ["Kano Central", "Kano North", "Kano South"]
federalConstituencies("Lagos").length; // 24
stateConstituencies("FCT"); // []: the FCT has no House of Assembly
constituencyLgas("FC236").map((l) => l.name); // ["Ikeja"]
constituencyWards("FC236").length; // wards that make up Ikeja federal constituency

Each record looks like this (the same in every language):

{
"kind": "federal_constituency",
"code": "FC236",
"state_code": "LA",
"inec_code": "FC/236/LA",
"name": "Ikeja",
"slug": "ikeja",
"aliases": [],
"lga_codes": ["NG025011"],
"sources": ["inec-irev"]
}

get_constituency / getConstituency accepts our code (FC236) or INEC’s (FC/236/LA).

  • Source. INEC’s Result Viewing portal (IReV): unit names from the 2023 general elections, and the ward links of the 2023 presidential election.
  • 990, not 993. INEC’s own list has 990 state constituencies. The figure of 993 often quoted in the press is not in INEC’s data.
  • A few links are flagged. 14 wards look mislinked in INEC’s data (a same-named ward in a neighbouring LGA). INEC’s value is kept, and the ward’s unverified_fields contains state_constituency. Details in coverage and gaps.
  • Boundaries can change. INEC can review constituencies; naija-data will follow with a new release.
